Sponsoring Your Spouse
-
If you were married in Canada, a legal marriage certificate from the province or territory where your marriage took place.
-
If your marriage occurred outside Canada, you can sponsor your spouse as long as your marriage is legally recognized both where it took place and in Canada. You may also be able to provide Proof of registration of marriage: This is evidence that the marriage has been officially registered with a government authority, such as a local, provincial, state, or national agency.
Sponsoring Your Common-Law or Conjugal Partner
You can sponsor your common-law partner if you have been living together in a committed relationship for at least one year. Typically, you will need to provide evidence of your partnership, such as joint financial documents, shared property, or combined mail.

To sponsor your conjugal partner, you must demonstrate that you have been in a committed relationship for at least one year and provide:
-
Evidence that you could not live together due to same-sex discrimination or other barriers (such as immigration issues or visa denials); and
-
Evidence that your relationship is more than physical, showing mutual interdependence (for example, through joint financial records).
-
You will need to provide supporting documents to prove the authenticity of your relationship, such as marriage certificates, joint bank accounts, shared assets, photographs, and affidavits from friends and family attesting to the genuineness of your relationship.
You can sponsor your partner for permanent residence if you meet these criteria:
-
You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
-
You are at least 18 years old.
-
You currently reside in Canada. If you live abroad but intend to return once your spouse or partner obtains permanent residence, you may still qualify, but this option is limited to citizens.
-
You are willing and able to provide financial support to your spouse or partner.
